Ararat is situated 200 km west of Melbourne on the Western Highway, and was initially established around the pastoral industry, but developed rapidly when gold was discovered in 1857. Wool and sheep farming are still important industries. Other industries include textile and automotive parts manufacture, and the provision of support services for people with psychiatric disabilities. Tourism based on the town's history and attractions include regional wineries, the Grampians National Park and the Golden Gateway Festival which is held over ten days in October. Ararat is a sister city to Taishan, China.
