The Art Gallery of South Australia is the major visual arts organisation in the state and holds the most significant collection of Australian colonial art. With its new wing, opened in March 1996, the Gallery will target more diverse audiences for its public programs. During the Adelaide Festival (a biennial event) the Gallery stages the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, one of the the nation's most important surveys of contemporary art. Display screens, plinths and stands are built to order by the Art Gallery for temporary exhibitions as the need arises.
