Leonora is an isolated goldfields town containing the original abandoned ghost town precinct of Gwalia, displaying the largest oregon pine incline headframe and Fraser Chalmers steam winding engine in Australia. The Sons of Gwalia mine underground was closed in 1963, reopening 1984 as an open mine.
