Burnie was established as a port, shipping ore from mining towns. Today Burnie is the fifth largest container port in Australia dealing with goods from Lactos-cheesmaker, Australian Paper Mills, agricultural/dairy produce and heavy engineering. Major events held in the region are: the Melbourne to Burnie yacht race in November; the Burnie Ten foot race in September; the overnight stage of Targa Tasmania in April; the Tulip Festival, Wynyard in October; and the Burnie Agricultural Show in October. There are also a wide range of cultural groups representing artists, potters, dancers, Brass Band, concert band, choir, and the historical society. The gallery is divided into four sections but may be used for one large exhibition.
