The city is surrounded by a flourishing rural area and has three major industries: the Australian Defence Industries, Monsbent Particle Board and Hirst Carpet Manufacturers. There is a Regional Art Gallery, outstanding Rose gardens and an active Theatre company. Early November heralds a Rose Festival and at Easter there is an Arts Festival known as Australia Felix.
