Geelong was established as a town in 1838 and developed as a major trading port for the export of wool and the Museum is located in a refurbished 1872 Woolstore. Manufacturing remains the mainstay of the region's economy but the development of the tertiary sector has seen the establishment of Deakin University, the Annual Health Laboratory, the Marine Science Complex, the International Fibre Institute and the CSIRO Division of Wool Technology. The region has over 31 nationalities as part of its cultural make up and has other cultural facilities such as an Art Gallery and Performing Arts Centre.
