Cessnock is an area rich in coal mining history and is the major vineyards district of New South Wales. Tourism is strong especially at weekends when visitors arrive from Sydney. The Doug Moran Portrait Exhibition has been displayed at the library three times years attracting an estimated 8,000 in the three week periods. There is an ongoing arts/crafts display at Marthaville - a local historic house - and the annual Cessnock City Art Show and Weston Art Show. There are occasional jazz/classical music events in the vineyards.
