Barcaldine is a rural community of 1,500 town folk and 300 country folk, and is the sheep and cattle country and home of the "Tree of Knowledge". Barcaldine is the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party. Cultural groups include the Barcaldine Branch of the Queensland Arts Council, the Barcaldine Cultural Association and Historical Society. Important festivals are the Barcaldine Biennial Arts Festival and the Artesian Festival in June. The Australian Workers Heritage Centre is protected by a two metre high perimeter fence and occupies what once was the Barcaldine State School. A travelling exhibition could be housed in any one of a number of rooms.
