Armidale community is diverse. It is primarily a graziers' community but, with the University of New England teaching hospital and TAFE College, there are many multicultural groups. There is also a very active Koori community. Art, theatre and music are very much alive in the town with groups such as Musica Viva, the North East Theatre Company as well as a Jazz Festival and the Autumn Festival. New England Art Museum will have a new building in 1997.
