Real 'skid row women' had no place to go until the Legion opened a hostel for them in Nth Melbourne.
In the time of the great depression (1930's) drunkenness, prostitution and vagrancy were all crimes. Legionaries who visited women in prison realised that all were doomed to be back 'inside' without support. From this came the decision to open a hostel, staffed entirely by volunteers. where derelict women could be sheltered. No one was turned away.
