The finalists and winner of the Category 3 Awards
The Museum was one of the three finalists in the 2008 Heritage Council Awards for Category 3:
‘Outstanding Conservation and/or Interpretation of a place listed on the State Register of Heritage Places'
It was a red letter day for the York Residency Museum when Shire Deputy CEO Graham Stanley, Museum Curator Carol Littlefair and Museum Volunteer Betty Kane were presented with this prestigious Heritage Council Award by the Minister for Culture & Arts Michelle Roberts on June 5th at Perth Town Hall.
Carol Littlefair explained “The award is for the conservation work done on the original kitchen and associated interpretation of the building. The judges took into account the massive effort by volunteers that went into this project and the quality of the work done. I would like to thank all of our dedicated and fantastic volunteer team who worked so very hard to make this possible, plus all the extra volunteers who came to help.
I would also like to congratulate the team at Avon Valley Building Co who successfully tackled the difficult rising damp problem and thank the Shire of York and Lotterywest for the essential funding and York Co-Op who provided paint. The judges praised the imaginative interpretation of the history of the building –
they especially liked the underlit viewing hole in the floor which shows the convict-built foundations and some of the artefacts found during the restoration works.
Our budget was a fraction of that spent by other prizewinners so this award is truly a reflection of community effort and we are all very proud of the results".
