Bobby Dazzler! marks the centenary of the birth of one of Australia’s theatrical legends. Sir Robert Helpmann was a man committed to excellence throughout his long and distinguished career. From his earliest days Helpmann had a driving ambition to learn as much as possible about every facet of the performing arts, and to be taught by the finest teachers in each discipline. Leaving Australia in the early 1930s to pursue a career in dance, when Helpmann returned to work full time in Australia in the 1960s he was an internationally acclaimed stage and film actor, director, choreographer and dancer, eager to collaborate with the best talents that Australia had to offer.
Bobby Dazzler! Celebrating the Helpmann Centenary features highlights of the fruitful collaborations that resulted from Helpmann’s return to Australia. Drawing on the diverse performing arts collections around the country, the installation brings together a selection of photographic and print material, costumes and related artefacts, personal memorabilia and video and audio recordings to explore and celebrate the centenary of this significant Australian.
It is proposed to tour this exhibition throughout 2009/2010.
