A record number of organisations have nominated to be involved in the Museum & Gallery Services Queensland 2008 Standards Program to be held in the Gold Coast, Hinterland and surrounding areas.
The Standards Program is an opportunity for museums to assess their practices and policies against national standards with the aim of becoming valuable and sustainable community assets. This ‘health check’ for museums will result in each participant organisation developing their own plan for the future. The 2008 program follows on from a successful three-year pilot run across the state, in Central Queensland in 2005, South East Queensland in 2006 and Far North Queensland in 2007.
The nine 2008 Standards participants are:
• Beaudesert Historical Museum
• Beenleigh and District Historical Village
• Garden Hill at Lost World Museum
• Gold Coast Historical Museum
• Museum of Australian Military Intelligence (Canungra)
• Rathdowney Area Development & Historical Association Inc
• Tamborine Mountain Heritage Centre
• Upper Clarence Historical Society Pioneer Cottage & Bicentennial Museum
• Yugambeh Museum, Language and Heritage Centre
In 2008 Museum and Gallery Services Queensland and Museums and Galleries NSW will pilot for the first time the revised draft of the National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries, an exciting collaboration between nine different organisations from across the nation including ACT Museums and Galleries, Arts Tasmania, Collections Council of Australia Ltd, History Trust of South Australia, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Museum and Gallery Services Queensland, Museums and Galleries NSW, Museums Australia (Victoria) and Western Australian Museum. Managing the museum, Involving people, and Development of a significant collection are the three key areas of Museum Practice that have been introduced to the self-review process this year.
Museum & Gallery Services Queensland looks forward to developing positive action plans for sustainable futures with participating organisations in 2008.
