Museum and Gallery Services Queensland (M&GSQ) congratulates the six community museums who have completed a year long groundbreaking program for Queensland’s museum sector: a Standards Program in South East Queensland.
The Standards Program is designed to help participating museums plan for a sustainable future by recognising their achievements, raising their profile, and identifying strategic priorities for improvement and development.
2006 is the second year of a three year Pilot for Museum & Gallery Services Queensland, funded by Arts Queensland.
The six museums to complete the program in 2006 are:
• Kingaroy Heritage Museum
• Logan City Historical Museum Society Inc.
• Redland Museum
• Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology
• Landsborough Museum – A Caloundra City Heritage Centre
• Queensland Ambulance Museums - Wynnum
On Friday 15 December at the offices of Museum & Gallery Services Queensland, Fortitude Valley, each of the six participating organisations received a certificate of recognition from Jenny Menzies, Executive Director, Arts Development, Arts Queensland in acknowledgment of their achievement and hard work. Participants also presented their plans for the future and provided feedback on their experience of this pilot program.
Some of the exciting news to emerge from the program includes:
• Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology, the custodians of many fine pieces of renaissance art and Old Masters including works by Rubens and Tintoretto, have commenced planning for the building of an art gallery to house the Museum’s Fine Art collection.
• Logan City Historical Museum and Queensland Ambulance Museums- Wynnum have upgraded and purchased new collection management software and undertaken intensive staff training in order to begin cataloguing their intriguing collections.
• Kingaroy Heritage Museum has announced a new focus for the museum on the area’s long established and successful peanut industry. Displays will be radically changed as the ingenuity and inventiveness of Kingaroy’s pioneer farmers is explored and interpreted in new ways.
• Redland Museum has won 5 significant local and state awards for excellence in 2006, and has set itself a target to become the best regional community museum in Australia.
• Landsborough Museum – A Caloundra City Heritage Centre has resolved to “stand on its own two feet” to survive & prosper with an enthusiastic volunteer workforce.
In 2007 the Museum Standards Program will be offered by M&GSQ in Far North Queensland with the support of the Museum Development Officer (FNQ).
